The Battle of the Bulge
Americans spend $60 billion dollars a year on diets, pills and programs in the hope that the weight loss option they choose will ultimately lead them to the body of their dreams. As obesity rates continue to rise, scientists have become increasingly curious to find out which of the most widely used plans yields the greatest result. Over the past two years, three noteworthy university-based studies (heavy hitters like Stanford and Harvard) pitted some of the leading diets against one another to figure out the answer to the question that plagues nearly everyone who wants to lose body fat…which freakin one is the best? Low carb? Low fat? Somewhere in between?
Before we share with you the results of this latest research, let me just shamelessly say that it didn’t take a Harvard study to tell us what we always knew about the most effective way to lose body fat and maintain lean muscle (which is always the goal of any sane fitness approach). The South Beach diet, in particular, is a dietary pillar in the holistic approach PBS has recommended to our clients for years.
For those unfamiliar with The South Beach Diet, in a nutshell, it’s considered a low carbohydrate diet that focuses on consuming small meals throughout the day containing protein, with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables. The real key to the diet’s success is its emphasis on eliminating high-glycemic carbohydrates (e.g. white bread and pasta) and replacing them with low-glycemic carbohydtrates (e.g. brown rice and whole grains.)
It comes as no surprise to us that when comparing the most popular diet plans, the results of the research were clear: low-carb diets consistently produced the greatest fat loss.
As a passionate proponent of the South Beach diet, we now have conclusive scientific evidence to confirm what we knew all along and what our clients have said as well – “This stuff works.”
